Josh McMinn | Owner, McMinn Company

I’m Josh McMinn, founder and owner of McMinn Company, a custom home building and renovation firm based in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I was born and raised here, and as a third-generation builder, construction has been a part of my life from the very beginning. I grew up learning the trade hands-on, guided by the same values I bring to every job today: honesty, quality, and hard work.

Before starting McMinn Company, I served for six years in the U.S. Navy as a Nuclear Electrician aboard the USS Oklahoma City (SSN-723), a fast-attack submarine. My time in the Navy was foundational. It taught me discipline, precision, and how to perform under pressure—skills that have stayed with me through every stage of my career.

While on active duty, I completed two major deployments. One took me to the Middle East, and the other was a historic mission that involved circumnavigating North America, traveling from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific by navigating beneath the Arctic ice and across the North Pole—an extremely rare feat accomplished by only a handful of submarines in U.S. Navy history. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that demanded exacting technical skill, strong leadership, and absolute teamwork.

I'm currently wrapping up my degree in Nuclear Engineering from Thomas Edison State University, continuing to build on my technical foundation.

After my military service, I transitioned into the private sector as an Applications Engineer with Godwin Pumps, where I managed a wide range of complex, large-scale infrastructure and site development projects. I played a key role in operations such as site development for the Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant, worked across multiple Duke Power facilities, and led critical components of the second and fifth largest sewer bypasses in North Carolina. My experience also includes hydrostatic testing on the Colonial Pipeline and site work for the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. These projects gave me invaluable experience coordinating field operations, solving real-time challenges, and managing technical teams across diverse environments.

Today, as a licensed Unlimited General Contractor and Unlimited Electrician, I lead McMinn Company with a focus on high-quality craftsmanship and personalized service. We’re a small, owner-operated business by design—allowing me to stay hands-on with every project. I work directly with each client to ensure clear communication, thoughtful execution, and enduring results.

When I’m not on a job site, I’m spending time outdoors with my wife Christi and our three children: Caitlyn, Logan, and Molly. Whether we’re camping, finding new waterfalls, fishing, or boating, we love everything these mountains have to offer. I make time each day for a hike or trail run, along with weightlifting.
